Dorothy H. Burkhart, 89, Akron, owned Dottie’s Beauty Shop, Eastern Star member, active in church

Dorothy H. “Dottie” Burkhart, 89, Akron, died Sept. 4, 2015, in Ephrata Manor.

Born in West Earl Township, a daughter of the late Ivan and Annie (Haines) Snader; her husband of 63 years, Melvin E. Burkhart, died March 20, 2013.

A graduate of Empire Beauty School, Reading, she owned and operated Dottie’s Beauty Shop, Akron, for 55 years. A member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School and served on the altar guild. Dottie cherished her family and attending the grandchildren’s activities. Simply mentioning her grandchildren brought a smile to her face. She enjoyed trips to the mountains and beach and was a long-time member of Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving is her daughter: Linda (Lee) Gerhart, Denver; sons: Kirby (Sheila Stricker) Burkhart, Ephrata; and Scott (Jan Brandt) Burkhart, Denver; grandchildren: Justin, Mandy, Chrystal, Jim, Josh, Melissa, Ashley, Travis, Kirsten, Kortni, and Kyle; and great-grandchildren: Payton, Jaxon, and Wesley.

A twin brother: Denton Snader; and sisters: Helen Long and Kathryn Krafft; predeceased her.

Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Denver, with the Rev. Peter Schwabe-Fry officiating. Burial followed in Muddy Creek Cemetery.
