Esther B. Kurtz Martin, 88, homemaker, enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family

Esther B. Kurtz Martin, 88, of Denver, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at her daughter’s residence.

She was born in Martindale to the late Frank Jr. and Lydia (Burkholder) Hurst, and was the wife of John K. Martin with whom she shared 22 years of marriage. She was also the wife of the late Elmer B. Kurtz, who passed away in 1992.

She was a member of Green Terrace Mennonite Church, Wernersville. Esther was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with family, quilting, and gardening. She had a heart for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children: David H., husband of Cheryl (Burkhart) Kurtz, of Stevens; Mary Jane, wife of Dennis Myer, of Greene, Maine; Marian H., wife of Kevin Auker, of Denver; Esther Mae, wife of Kenneth G. Martin, of Denver; Gerald H., husband of Sharon (Nissley) Kurtz, of Charleston, S.C.; Betty J, wife of Darrell Eberly, of New Holland; daughter-in-law: Sharon (Martin) Kurtz; five stepsons: Glenn, husband of Milred (Ebersole) Martin, of York; Eugene Martin and Kenneth Martin, both of Elizabethtown; Nelson, husband of Christine (Manning) Martin, of Westfield; Stanley, husband of Susan (Hess) Martin, of Elizabethtown; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lydia, wife of the late Ivan Hoover, of Stevens; Alta, wife of Stanley Martin, of Ephrata; three brothers: Paul, husband of Anna Mary (Weaver) Hurst, of Ephrata; Frank, husband of Anna Mary (Good) Hurst, of East Earl; Ivan, husband of Mary (Martin) Hurst, of Ephrata.

In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by a son: Lester H. Kurtz; and four siblings: Emma Horning, Noah Hurst, Katie Horning, and Mary Martin.

Services were held June 25 at Indiantown Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Pastors Dennis Myer and Ben Martin officiating. Interment took place in the Indiantown Mennonite Cemetery.
