Gene H. Huston, 95, decorated WWII vet, GPU engineer, avid hiker, trail caretaker

Gene H. Huston, 95, formerly of Adamstown, died Sept. 11, 2017, in Maple Farm, Akron.

Born in Franklin, he was a son of the late Walter and Minnie Mae (Whitman) Huston. His wife of 71 years, Mary Ellen (Cather) Huston, died Mar. 9, 2014.

Gene was a World War II Navy Bronze Star veteran, serving as Radioman 1st Class. A Grove City College graduate, he was a licensed professional engineer and worked as superintendent of transmission and distribution for 33 years for General Public Utilities. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville; a 33rd Degree Mason, past master of Petrolia Lodge #363, Oil City; and a member of Venango Lodge of Perfection. He traveled the U.S. and Mexico with his wife in their RV.

An avid hiker, he was a member of Keystone Trails Association and cared for sections of Pennsylvania’s Mid State Trail.

Surviving are a son: Jon, married to Donna (Prall), Randolph, N.J.; daughter: Jane L. Huston, married to Ernest Werstler Jr., Reamstown; granddaughters: Meredith Huston; and Marissa, married to Paul Schimpf; great-grandson: Leo Schimpf; and a sister: Nancy Nicks, Lake Wales, Fla.

Services will be Saturday, Sept. 16, in Good Funeral Home, Reamstown; Masonic Rites by Ephrata Lodge #665 F&AM at 11 a.m., funeral to follow, with The Rev. William E. Hoch officiating. Burial with military honors by Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Adamstown.

Rather than flowers, contributions may be made to Peace United Church of Christ, 37 E. Swartzville Road, Denver, PA 17517; or Keystone Trails Association, 46 E. Main St., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.

Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, was entrusted with the arrangements. Condolences and memories may be shared at goodfuneral.com.
