Harry Thomas ‘Tom’ Sell, U.S. Army vet, U.S. Naval Observatory chief of police, Mason

Harry Thomas “Tom” Sell was born Dec. 15, 1934, in Taneytown, Md. He was the son of the late Paul Henry and Silvia Louise (Zurgable) Sell. He was the husband of the late Ida (Bruce) of Stephenville, Newfoundland (Canada), his wife of 50 years who died in 2008.

Tom passed away on June 3, 2016, at 2:50 p.m., from complications of pneumonia.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with more than 25 years of service, serving in the United States, France, Newfoundland, and Baffin Island NWT Canada, and at a later date, at the U.S. Naval Observatory, Washington, D.C., where he later became the chief of police in February 1993, a position he held for 10 years.

Tom was a past master of Birmingham Lodge No. 188, F.&A.M. of Beltsville, Md.; Southern Maryland Past Masters Association; Ephrata Lodge No. 665, F. & A. M. of Pennsylvania; a 32nd degree mason of The Valley of Reading PA, NMJ, USA; a member in perpetuity of The National Sojourners of Lancaster Chapter No. 292, The Royal Order of Scotland; and a paid-up-for-life member of the American Legion Post 0120, Taneytown, Md.

Tom is survived by three sisters: M. Patricia Brown of Baltimore, Md.; Josephine L. Sell of Fairfield; Jeanne E. Bialecki, Fairfield. Surviving children are: Laura Ann Burgess of Ephrata; Teresa Seek of Frederick, Md.; Wanda Jean Greenan of Honey Brook; Thomas Bruce Sell of Frederick, Md.; and Paul Henry Sell, of Honey Brook; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Paul Henry Sell Jr.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 8, from noon to 2 p.m., at Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 2 p.m. by the Ephrata Blue Lodge No. 665 F.&A.M. Interment and a graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 301 Grant St., Suite 900, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
