Herbert Distad, IBM worker, vet

Herbert V. Distad, 81, of Brownstown, formerly of Rochester, Minn., passed away Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.

He was born in Olmsted County, Minn., son of the late Oscar T. and Anna Senjem Distad.

He worked for IBM in Rochester for 39 years. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 as a dental prosthetics technician on the submarine tender USS Fulton. Herb had the gift of repairing and maintaining the home and vehicles.

He is survived by his wife: Verna; and three children: Gregory, Army chaplain stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., husband of Elaine; Sonia, wife of Jeffrey Carr, of Greenville, S.C.; and Stephen, of Houston, Texas; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister: Joanne Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by ten siblings.

A private funeral service was held with interment in Habecker Mennonite Cemetery. The memorial service was held at Liberty Baptist Church, Ephrata, on Oct. 3, with Chaplain Gregory Distad officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Liberty Baptist Church for building maintenance.

Arrangements were made by the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., Mountville/Columbia.
