James S. “Jamie” Heston, 45, of Denver, Colo., passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at the home of his parents, James V. and Veronica (Kraft) Heston, in East Cocalico Township, after more than two years dealing with the effects of colon cancer, which he faced with grace and courage.

Born in Wilkes Barre, he was a graduate of the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Jamie was employed as a mental health counselor at the Third Way Center, Denver, Colo., working with mentally ill, homeless and at-risk youth. Because of his unique ability to establish trust and create therapeutic relationships through the use of sports and outdoor activities, the Third Way Center dedicated their outdoor athletic area to Jamie, when he was no longer able to work, erecting a plaque with the inscription, “The Jamie Heston Sport Court, in recognition of his commitment, passion and influence to at-risk youth.” A member of his baseball, soccer and ski teams in high school, he remained an ardent fan of all sports, but he was especially a lifelong enthusiastic fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Denver Broncos.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters: Mary Cooper (Robert) of Arlington, Va. and Jennifer Fisher (Richard) of Stevensville, Md. He is also survived by nephews: Ned and Quinn Cooper and niece: Katie Fisher. Jamie’s family wishes to thank Hospice and Community Care for the in-home support they provided in his care.

Those wishing to honor Jamie’s memory are invited to send a contribution, in his name, to the Third Way Center, Inc., P.O. Box 61385, Denver, CO 80206.

A memorial mass will be held at the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, at 11 a .m. Feb. 28.

Arrangements by Roseboro Stradling Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., Denver. Online condolences can be given at roseborostradling.com.
