John Edward Dillon, 97, Denver, Reading Railroad engineer, attended Swamp Lutheran

John Edward Dillon, 97, of Denver, formerly a resident of Country Meadows in Wyomissing for five years, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was born in West Reading to the late Charles and Dorothy (Strouse) Dillon; and was the husband of the late Ruth A. (Ferguson) Dillon, who died in 2008.

John retired as a locomotive engineer for Reading Railroad after 50 years of service. John was a member of the Swamp Lutheran Church in Reinholds, where he often did volunteer work. He was also a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Reading, the Puritan Lodge No. 549 F&AM in West Reading, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees Inc., United Transportation Union, and the East Ends Athletic Club.

He is survived by a daughter: D. Dale, wife of Galen P. Young, of Denver; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Harold C. and Brook E. Dillon; and a sister: Grace Rightmeyer.

A viewing will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Swamp Lutheran Church, 275 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, where a Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Dennis L. Trout officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church social hall. Interment will take place in the Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township, Berks County.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Swamp Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 275 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, PA 17569, in John’s memory.
