John L. Zerbe Sr., 86, Bethlehem Steel retiree, enjoyed fishing, speaking Pennsylvania Dutch
John L. Zerbe, Sr., 86, Denver, entered into rest March 2, 2017.
Born in East Cocalico Township, a son of Joseph P. and Edna M. (Kramer) Zerbe, he was married for 66 years to Mary E. (Burkenheiser) Zerbe.
A member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Denver, he retired from Bethlehem Steel, Morgantown, and was a terrific husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. John’s life passions, in addition to family, were fishing, speaking Pennsylvania Dutch, and listening to polkas. He learned sign language to communicate with two siblings, and was a true friend, hard worker, and offered a helping hand to anyone.
Also surviving are daughters: Barbara A., wife of George M. Wentzel III, Denver; and Beverly Frey, Harrisburg; grandchildren: Michelle, Melissa, Angie, Phillip, Alex, and Shane; many great-grandchildren; sisters: Guyula Sweigart, wife of Ammon Seifrit, Interlachen, Fla.; Dorothy, wife of Glen Allen Anderson, Williamsport, Md.; and brother: Clayton Zerbe, Denver.
He was predeceased by children: John Jr., Jacob Lavern, and Bonita Ann; and 12 siblings.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m., from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, with the Rev. Peter Schwabe-Fry officiating. Burial will be in Muddy Creek Cemetery. The viewing will be Friday, March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., and prior to the funeral.
