Joseph E. McGovern, 90, WWII vet, Wickes manager, councilman, Galens and UPS worker

Joseph E. McGovern, 90, of Akron, passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born July 26, 1927, in Reading, he was son of the late Walter and Helen McGovern.

Mr. McGovern was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II.

Joseph graduated from Reading High School, Class of 1945, where he played soccer, even after graduation. He was a mail carrier before enlisting with the U.S. Navy. After serving his country, he was a retail salesman with Merritt and Central Lumber, both in Reading; then went to Wickes Lumber in Ephrata where he became assistant manager, eventually transferring to their Reading location where he was a top 25 manager in the country two years running, 1977-78 and 1978-79.

He served as a Democratic councilman in Shillington for four years. Additionally, Joseph worked at Galen’s in Ephrata and following his retirement, worked 15 years for UPS as car wash supervisor. He was a lifetime member of the Reading/Berks Basketball Old Timers and the Excelsior Beneficial Association.

Surviving are his loving wife of 29 years: Judith (Kilhefner) McGovern of Akron; son: Michael McGovern, and wife Susan Shelly of Shillington; daughter: Karen Bontrager of Michigan; stepson: Eric Fausnacht and life partner, Jeffrey Slocum of Bucks County; stepdaughters: Krista Fausnacht, at home; Lori Fischer of Gettysburg; and Michelle Young of Reamstown; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata.
