Rev. Richard E. Spratlin, 80, Korea vet, nursing home administrator, Lutheran pastor, loved golfing

The Rev. Richard E. Spratlin, 80, Ephrata, formerly of Gettysburg, died June 5, 2016, at home with his family.

Born in Medford, Mass., a son of the late Robert J. and Emma E. (Heikel) Spratlin, his wife of 50 years, Nancy L. (Hurst) Spratlin, died March 28, 2010.

He was a 1953 Tottenville High School graduate, Staten Island, N.Y.; with a 1962 City University of NYC bachelor of arts degree; and 1966 master of divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. Having celebrated his 50th year of ordination he had served the Lutheran churches of Calvary (Bronx, N.Y.), Christ (Montgomery), St. Stephen (Lancaster), Bender (Biglersville), and was a member of St. Paul New Chester congregation, New Oxford.

A licensed nursing home administrator, he served Germantown Home (Philadelphia), and Allegheny Home (Johnstown), and was actively involved in numerous positions on boards and committees during his pastorate. Richard was a Korean War army veteran in the 11th Airborne Div. (Angels), 188th Airborne Infantry, and received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Award and the Parachutist Badge. He volunteered at Ephrata Hospital, and was a member of Ephrata Lions Club, loved golfing and Zumba Gold.

Surviving are his daughters: Maureen Ann (Keith D.) Nichols, Ephrata; and Karen L. (Stephen M.) Keener, York; granddaughters: Aimee Sohnleitner and Alexandria Keener; and great-grandchildren: Andrew, Alyssa, and Zachary Maurer.

A memorial celebration of Richard’s life will be held Saturday, June 11, at 3 p.m. from Good Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 34 N. Reamstown Road, Reamstown. Private inurnment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
