Richard ‘Richie’ Firestone , 90, WWII vet, retired Cocalico school transportation supervisor

Richard “Richie” Firestone, 90, of Denver, passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Ephrata Manor.

He was born in Reinholds to the late Martin and Ellen (Border) Firestone, and was the husband of the late Louella (Foltz) Firestone, who passed away in 2010 after sharing 62 years of marriage.

Richard was a member of the Vinemont Community Lutheran Church in Reinholds for 65 years, where he served on the church council and participated in the church barbecue for many years. He was a member of the Cocalico Sportsman Club, the Northern Lancaster County Beagle Club, the Adamstown Rod & Gun Club, and the East Fork Hunting Club. He was an avid trap shooter and hunter. He enjoyed hunting, camping, bluegrass music, and raising beagle hunting dogs.

Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Ephrata Manufacturing Company for over 20 years, and then worked as a bus driver and transportation supervisor for Cocalico School District for 30 years, having retired in 2000.

Richard is survived by a son: Gary, husband of Dorene (Sweigert) Firestone of Reinholds; three daughters: Linda, wife of Richard Sweigart; Judy, wife of Martin Ingram; and Bonnie, wife of David Luck; all of Denver; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Benjamin, Robert, and Ray Firestone; and a sister: Dorothy Leed.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver. An additional viewing will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the funeral home, where funeral services will follow at 10 a.m., with Rev. Rodney Shearer officiating. Interment will take place in the Swamp Cemetery.
