Richard Roland Houser, 82, past president of Akron fire company, EMM Sales mechanic

Richard Roland Houser, 82, of Akron, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at his home.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Roland Rollman and Pauline (Thatcher) Houser and was the husband of Jane Dorothy (Shreiner) Houser, whom he married Nov. 23, 1953, sharing 61 years of marriage.

He was a life member of the Rothsville Volunteer Fire Company, member and past president of the Akron Volunteer Fire Company, and a fire policeman for Akron, Rothsville, and West Earl Township. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing while staying in cabins in Potter and Tioga counties. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Richard worked as a mechanic for EMM Sales and Service, retiring in 2009 after 40 years of service. In earlier years, he was employed at the Miller Hess Shoe Co. in Akron, Farm Hand in Willow Street, and the Daffin Co. in Lancaster.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by three sons: Jeffrey Houser of Kinzers; Barry Houser of Manheim; and Jim, husband of Susan (Mentzer) Houser of Akron; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Patsy Whirt of Ephrata.

He was preceded in death by a son: Dennis Houser; a brother: Harold Houser; and a sister: Betty Lou Cammauf.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Akron Church of the Brethren, 613 Main St., Akron. An additional viewing will he held on Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Akron Church of the Brethren, followed by funeral services at 10 a.m., with Pastor Tom Weber officiating. Interment will take place in the Millport Union Cemetery.
