Richard Weidman, 91, Ephrata, WWII vet, held patents for many nuclear fuels, avid gardener

Richard Weidman, 91, of Ephrata, and formerly of New Holland and Verona, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Ephrata Manor.

He was the loving husband of the late Mary Ann (Pesanchik) Weidman, who passed away on Feb. 21, 2001. Richard was born on Jan. 10, 1927 in New Holland.

He is survived by two children: Jeffrey R. Weidman of Ephrata; and Suzanne L. (Bruce) Nelson of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; and a daughter-in-law: Rose Weidman of Ephrata.

In addition to his wife, Mary Anne, Richard was preceded in death by his parents: Elray and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Weidman; and his brother: Elray Weidman.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Army and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He was the holder of numerous patents for nuclear fuels and co-authored a number of research papers for the American Chemical Society.

Richard was an avid gardener and walker and, enjoyed spending time with family and friends especially on trips to the Jersey Shore.

Services were held June 2 at Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata, officiated by the Rev. Robert Kramer. Interment was held at Bergstrasse Lutheran Cemetery, Ephrata Township.

Those who desire may make memorial contributions in Richard’s name to the Salvation Army.
