Robert M. Benn 87, fiddler since age three, WWII vet, former Ephrata HS employee

Robert M. Benn, 87, of Wernersville, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Bellwood to the late Walter and Essie (Jackson) Benn and was the husband of Dorothy M. (Hollen) Benn, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage this past January.

Robert was a member of Wiest Memorial UM Church in Schoeneck where he formerly served as the choir director. A graduate of Bellwood High School class of 1945, a WWII veteran of the US Army and a member of the Cloister Post #429 American Legion in Ephrata. Robert started playing the fiddle at age three and was in a group called “Happy Trio.” He also enjoyed camping and traveling, visiting 75 percent of the United States.

During his working years, Robert worked for the former Pennfield Corp., Ephrata, was a custodian for CocalicoSchool District and was last employed by Latshaw Bros. Concrete, Denver.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his children: Susan J.B., wife of Joseph Berardi of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Thomas R., husband of Kim Benn of Mohnton, Timothy R., husband of Coleen Benn of West Branch, Mich., Joan M., wife of Larry Latshaw of Wernersville, Bonnie J., wife of David Spotts of Lemont; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings: Verna, wife of Earl Detwiler of Clearfield, Ronald, husband of Jean Benn of Bellwood, Pearl Campbell of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and George Benn of Tonawanda, N.Y..

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Nancy Ann Benn; and five siblings: Dorothy Detwiler, Charles Benn, Esther Benn, Melvin Benn and Ralph Benn.

Services were held March 22 from the Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood, followed by burial in LoganValleyCemetery. Memorial contributions in Robert’s memory may be made to WiestMemorialUnitedMethodistChurch, 48 S. King St., Schoeneck, PA17578.
