Rudolf Vaitl, 78, longtime Ephrata rotarian, electrician

Rudolf "Rudi" Vaitl, 78, of Ephrata, passed through the experience of death peacefully at home with his family at his side Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012.

He was born in Lancaster and raised in Munich, Germany, by his parents, the late Johannes and Ottilie (Rohressen) Vaitl. Rudi was the husband of Florence (Stuber) Vaitl, with whom he shared 27 years of marriage.

Rudi was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and a long time member of Ephrata Rotary. He was a master tinkerer and enjoyed going to auctions, flea markets and antiquing. During his working years, he worked as an electrician for IBEW414.

In addition to his wife, Rudi is survived by three children: Angelika, wife of Robert Tegan, of Leesport; Karl, husband of Julia Vaitl, of Denver; and Vera Fritz, of Adamstown; two stepsons: Steven, husband of Patty Hackman, of Sunbury; Mitchell, husband of Georgette Hackman, of Denver; a stepdaughter: Karen, wife of Leo Hackman-Mendonca, of Selinsgrove; a granddaughter: Brittany Vaitl; six step-grandchildren: Adrienne, Blakley, Kristen, Timothy, Molly and Ian; one great-grandchild: Mya Vaitl; three sisters: Maria Weaver, of Ephrata; Otti, wife of David Weaver, of Ephrata; Elisabeth Vaitl, of Ephrata; and he is also survived by his loyal rescue labrador: Lacey.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Edith Vaitl; son: Werner Vaitl; brother: Johannes Vaitl; and sister: Frieda Heilmeier.

A visitation will be held Sept. 6 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, followed by a prayer service held at 2 p.m. Final farewell and commendation will take place in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
