Ruth Elizabeth Swartz, 91, Bollman’s worker, keyboard player, enjoyed baking, singing

Ruth Elizabeth (Shirk) Swartz, 91, of Brecknock Township, passed away on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at the Reading Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

She was the wife of the late Earl L. Swartz, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage. Born in Alleghenyville, she was the daughter of the late Raymond M. and Elsie P. (Matz) Shirk.

Ruth was a 1942 graduate of the former Shillington High School. She worked at the former William G. Leininger Knitting Mill in Mohnton and Bollman’s Hat Factory in Adamstown in the office. Ruth later worked at the Shillington Farmers Market baking for more than 15 years and at Stoltzfus Garden.

She was a member of Allegheny United Church of Christ. Ruth had many hobbies that she enjoyed such as gardening, sewing, knitting, baking, playing the piano and organ, caring for her pets, and singing in the church choir. She very much enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three children: Joanne (Swartz), wife of Lee Pfleger, of Denver; Mary (Swartz), wife of David Silcox, of Shillington; and Dennis Sr., husband of Annbeth (Mosser) Swartz, of Brecknock Township. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Chris Pfleger, Jill (Pfleger) Legerton, Lisa Pfleger, Bradley Silcox, Amy Silcox, Heather (Swartz) Lewis, and Dennis Swartz Jr.; and four great-grandchildren: Natalee, Cady, Haylee Legerton, and Tristan Parson.

She was predeceased by one daughter: Nancy Swartz who died in 1955; and four brothers: Walter Shirk, William Shirk, Norman Shirk, and Clarence Shirk.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., at Allegheny United Church of Christ, 1219 Kurtz Mill Road, Mohnton, with the Rev. Dr. Martha M. Smith, officiating. Friends may call to greet the family from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will follow the service at Allegheny Union Cemetery.
