Thomas M. Hassell, 65, Navy vet, commercial painter, Eagles fan, enjoyed riding the rail-trail

Thomas “Tom” M. Hassell, 65, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Edenton, N.C., on Dec. 7, 1951, to Esther Marie and the late John C. Hassell.

He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church.

Tom was a self-employed commercial painter. He graduated from Garden Spot High School, Class of 1969, and attended Southwood College in North Carolina. He also served four years in the Navy. Tom enjoyed the Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail-Trail, was an avid Eagles football fan, and loved vacationing in the Outer Banks.

In addition to his mother, Tom is survived by three siblings: Maxine C., wife of Dennis E. Lapp, of Akron; Tim N., husband of Kathy (Butner) Hassell, of Brunnerville; Jim K., husband of Christine V. (Auker) Hassell, of Akron; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Aug. 8 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Jim Bongard officiating. Interment took place in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, with military honors accorded by Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard.
