Vera Gerhart, 94, Ephrata, 40-year Donecker’s employee, a ‘beautiful, elegant lady’

By on July 15, 2015

Verna Margaret (Adam) Gerhart died peacefully at the Ephrata Manor on the evening of July 2, 2015. She lived 94 “wonderful” years and called those years “blessed.”

Born in Sayre, she lived all of her wedded life in Ephrata, happily married for 67 years to the love of her life, John Keith Gerhart.

Verna loved spending time with her family and friends; both in the Park Avenue neighborhood and at work in Donecker’s store. As one of the first employees of that Ephrata landmark, Verna remained there as a permanently beautiful and classic fixture for 40 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ephrata, the Order of the Eastern Star, Physical Culture Club, and Senior Moments. First and foremost, Verna cherished time with her family. She also loved learning and traveling.

Everyone who knew her would remark that she was continuously kind, caring, and gracious to all. In addition to her bright spirit and generous, loving heart, folks just referred to her as a “beautiful, elegant lady,” inside and out.

Surviving her are two children: Sandra G. Wolf, widow of Jesse B. Wolf, of Lititz; and Jeffrey L. Gerhart, husband to M. Enrica Gerhart, of Lancaster. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Kirk Wolf of Bay City, Mich.; Eric Wolf of St. Paul, Minn.; Antonia (Gerhart) Long of Oahu, Hawaii; Adam Gerhart of Venice, Calif.; and Lee Gerhart of Lancaster; along with two great-grandchildren: Lewis and Henry Wolf of Michigan.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, at the Ephrata Manor at 11 a.m. Please join us in celebrating the life of Verna Gerhart, a lovely, loving wife, mother, and friend. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Verna’s memory can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 68 N. Church St. Ephrata 17522; or Off the Streets, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster (offthestreetsnow.com/Lancaster).
