Fresh off leading Cocalico to its greatest season in program history, several members of the Eagles’ soccer team reaped the awards at the 2018 L-L League All-Star banquet held at Eden Resort.

Senior midfielder Danny Engle led the way as he was one of four L-L League players to receive All-State nominations, joining Manheim Township’s Andrea DiSomma, Conestoga Valley’s Robby Krasinski and Ben Lefever of Lancaster Mennonite.

“I was really excited,” Engle said of receiving the honor. “Obviously it’s an honor to be named All-State because there are only four in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, which every year is filled with great competition and great players. It could have gone to others but I’m just really happy that they chose me. I worked very hard all season, not for that necessarily, but it’s cool to have that accolade too.”

Engle helped lead the Eagles to a 19-2-0 mark, on their way to claiming the Section Three and Lancaster-Lebanon League titles for the first time in school history. He scored six goals and had three assists while also helping the Eagle defense to 15 shutouts on the season.

“I’m very happy that Danny’s accomplishments were recognized by our league,” Cocalico Coach Derek Sipe said. “His play throughout the season and leadership on and off the field is a big reason why we were able to be as successful as we were. Danny was able to make the players around him better, and had a senior season that will go down as one of the best in Cocalico history.”

In addition to his all-state nomination, Engle was one of four Eagles to be named as a First Team Section Three All-Star, joining senior defender Danny Harrington, senior goalie Peyton Stetter and sophomore striker Aaron Weitzel.

Cocalico midfielders Darren Main (sophomore) and Nick Stauffer, a senior, each were recognized as Second Team All-Stars while senior Grant Mellinger was honored as an Academic All-Star.

Also, Sipe was selected as the Section Three Coach of the Year.

While the league champion Eagles were cleaning up awards in Section Three, Ephrata also had its share of award winners in Section Two.

Heading that list was senior goalie Cole Hummel, who was named the Section Two Co-Player of the Year, along with Manheim Central midfielder Carson Brenize.

Hummel collected five shutouts on the season in helping the Mounts to a 12-6-1 mark as well as league and district playoff berths.

Hummel was also named to the Section Two First Team, along with junior striker Tyler Shue.

Two Mounts to receive Second Team nominations included senior defenders Trevin Hertzog and Tanyon Loose, while fellow senior Alex Auker was selected as an Academic All-Star.

Ephrata was also named winner of the Sportsmanship Award.
