EHS girls down E-town, improve to 2-1 on season

The Ephrata girls tennis team enjoyed a successful opening week of the season, going 2-1 in three matches played.

Monday afternoon at home, the Lady Mounts took care of visiting Elizabethtown by a 5-2 score in non-league action.

Ephrata took two out of three in doubles before closing out the team victory with three wins in singles play.

At number one singles, Ephrata’s Kandice Liebl scored a 6-1, 6-1 decision over the Bears’ Lauren Masser. Ephrata’s Katelyn Wenger earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Emily Louie at number three, while at number four, Ashlyn Mazzocchi of Ephrata defeated Katy Hackenberg by a 6-1, 6-2 tally.

In doubles, Ephrata’s number two team of Liebl/Wenger earned an 8-6 victory while the number three team of Jamie Chon and Amanda Nolt notched a 9-7 win.

Friday afternoon on the road at Elco, the Lady Mounts earned a 5-2 victory over the Raiders.

Singles winners for Ephrata included: Liebl (7-5, 6-2); Wenger (6-1, 6-1); and Melissa Castaneda earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

In doubles action, Liebl/Wenger (8-6) and Chon/Nolt (8-4) both were victorious for the Lady Mounts.

Ephrata opened the season last Wednesday at home where the Lady Mounts dropped a 5-2 decision at the hands of Manheim Central.

The lone Ephrata wins on the day came in singles play as Liebl earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) victory over Hannah Kowalski at number one while Wenger posted a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) win against Eliana Shenk.

Up next, Ephrata will be in action Wednesday afternoon when the Lady Mounts travel to Lampeter-Strasburg.

Cocalico, meanwhile, picked up its first win of the season Monday afternoon at Elco with a 4-3 decision over the host Raiders. Individual results from that match were unavailable at presstime.

The Lady Eagles (1-2) opened the season last Wednesday at Conestoga Valley where the host Buckskins earned a solid 6-1 victory over Cocalico.

The lone Cocalico victory came at number two singles where Kassie Nichols knocked off CV’s Ellie Kready in a 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 verdict.

Friday afternoon at home vs. Lancaster Country Day, the visitors took three out of four matches in singles play to earn a 4-3 come-from-behind victory.

Cocalico led early with doubles wins by the teams of Cara DiCiano and Nichols (9-7) at number two, and Grace Templin and Lena Doepner (8-3) at three.

However in singles play, Kylie Armstrong was the lone winner for Cocalico as she edged Isabella Gerace 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 at number two.

The Lady Eagles return to action Wednesday at home where they are set to face Warwick.
